FIRST AID FOR parents & babysitters
Would you know what to do if your child stopped breathing?
Do you feel worried about your child choking and not knowing what to do?
What do you do when your baby bumps their head?
LAST YEAR, THERE WERE 29 DROWNINGS OF CHILDREN BETWEEN 0 AND 4 YEARS OF AGE. PLEASE DON'T LET YOUR CHILD BECOME A STATISTIC. KNOW WHAT TO DO.
Hi. I'm Siobhan McNabb, the director of Black Swan First Aid Training. I'm a qualified and experienced ambulance paramedic and mother, with qualifications including a Bachelor of Science in Paramedical Science, a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Psychology and currently completing a masters degree in Clinical Psychology. In addition, I have worked as a Paramedic, regional trainer and regional training co-ordinator for St John Ambulance WA. I have over 10 years of pre-hospital medical and first aid training experience. Unfortunately I have also had to perform first aid on my toddler on several occasions and these experiences have convinced me of the need for all parents to have first aid training. I'm passionate about teaching and saving lives and would love to help give you the confidence and skills to be able to act effectively in an emergency, should your child need your help.
I can offer you a relaxed and informative training experience with the flexibility to do this training around your busy schedule. You can attend one of our public courses, or hold a small course in your own home, choosing an evening or day, weekend or weekday session. We can even run courses split over two different dates.
About my courses:
I strive to create a relaxed, friendly and fun environment focused on helping you learn and build confidence in your first aid skills. All of my training follows up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines, as published by relevant bodies including the Australian Resuscitation Council, Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy Limited, the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Australian Venom Research Unit. In addition to learning invaluable life-saving skills you will receive a first aid manual, memory aides and a generous discount on first aid kits when you complete any of my infant and child-focused first aid courses.
There are several options for courses:
2 hour first aid fundamentals for infants and children- $50. This short essential infant and child-focused first aid workshop looks at the topics which are related to injuries and accidents most likely to present in a paediatric accident and emergency department. Topics covered include CPR and choking (practical sessions), drowning, allergies and anaphylaxis, viral illness, fever management, seizures and burns. Please note- there are no breaks on this workshop.
4 hour long refresher first aid course- $60. The refresher course works well for those who have done first aid in the past and want to brush up on the critical skills of CPR and choking management skills. This shorter course also goes through unconsciousness, common respiratory illnesses, allergies and anaphylaxis, and how to recognize when your child is critically ill and needs emergency care. The time allowed includes practical sessions and breaks to maximise skill development.
6 hour full first aid course- $85. This course covers CPR, unconsciousness, choking, respiratory conditions, allergies/anaphylaxis, how to recognize when your child is critically ill and needs emergency care, fevers, seizures, burns, fractures, bleeds and other injuries, poisoning, recognition and treatment for bites and stings including snake bite management, and emergency-related infant/child mental health. The time allowed includes practical sessions and breaks to maximise skill development.
The schedules include times for breaks and cater for sleep-deprived parents with young babies. Privately booked courses can be individually tailored, including shortened breaks for a reduced course duration and choice of topics.
Please note, this course has been specially designed for parents, grandparents and carers of small children. There are no formal assessments and this course will not result in a nationally recognised qualification.
